Large and Loose Crochet (and Knit) Tip

Summer is here for many of us. Working on heavy winter projects is uncomfortable whether in hot, dry climates or in hot, humid ones.

When I work on anything of size in the summer, the weight and density of the projects takes away from the pleasure of making it. So, I work large and loose in the summer, wherever possible. This works just as well with knit and with crochet.

There is no secret - I just go up two or three hook (or needle) sizes. If I'm making a baby blankie that normally calls for an E or F hook, I work the pattern with an H hook. Likewise, if I'm making a prayer shawl or a small afghan, I use a J or K hook. The items look just as nice but they are lighter in weight, and in some cases, even lacey and pretty.

Now, some dudes are extremely macho. I have one or two in my own circle who will not wear anything in grape or purple or anything that hints of pink. Same thing with "lacey" things. However I can easily use the basic ripple pattern with a larger hook and use their fave "manly" colors and they will not notice that it's a tad lacey. The "sergeant's stripes," as my sis used to call them, masks the looser look.

In exchange, these items wear very well in the summer. They still protect against drafty air conditioning but aren't heavy enough to feel oppressively hot.

So, go ahead, start something major, even though it is hot, but just go large (with the hook/needle size) and loose (with the pattern). Have a little fun, even in the warm weather.
