Today I saw true love and charity in action. At the rehab, a sweet 71 year old black CNA had my dear friend as one of her patients. She was so gentle and so caring when she cleaned and changed her and the bed that it was a wonder to see.
Even more important, she managed to get lotion on legs and feet that were dried out, almost, because most of the ones before her had given up because Jane moaned in pain whenever they touched her skin there. This dear woman had the sweetest, gentlest, lightest touch, humming softly while she quietly went about her tasks.
She said that friends had often asked her why she didn’t retire and she said she doesn’t see any reason to because she can still keep on going on. I am glad for that.
What I saw was that even the smallest of tasks can bring great joy to others. I saw true charity of heart in action. I need to see places where I can do more of this myself. It isn’t a superhuman effort. It is just simple caring for others, in small ways. My friend actually smiled when the lotion was being smoothed onto her poor toes and feet. She looked like she was in heaven.
Father, please bless this caregiving woman to an extraordinary extent, and let a little of her charity wash over onto me.
