I used to think that crocheting and other needlecrafts (and, all crafts) required the ability to follow instructions, patterns, designs. I’ve changed my attitude about that in the last few years. Yes, I need to be able to follow instructions. Unless I can do that, I would not be able to understand what to do when following them does not work.
There are times a pattern does not work because I just do not understand all or part of the instructions. There are times when it does not work because I run out of a supply before the pattern is finished. There are times when it does not work because I’m aiming at a certain size, and I cannot get it to come out to that size.
In crochet, I am blessed. If a pattern does not work because I do not understand it, I can often adapt it a little. Years ago, before I had the experience of working many, many different patterns, I wouldn’t have dared to adjust the pattern. I wouldn’t have even known how to do that.
If, when crocheting, I run out of a certain color yarn or thread, I can either wait until I can get more, or I can finish in a different color. This is easier for me now, after all the crocheting I have done. Now I can choose a finishing color much more easily than when I was just starting.
And, if it does not work because of finished size, again, I can adjust by adding a few more rows, or taking another adjustment. Again, experience has taught me this.
Thank you, Dear Lord, for the experience you have led me to gain, and the flexibility you have blessed me with.
