Wonderful Day Road Trip with Friends

part of date grove
A day to remember, a joy. A few of us went out from Vegas to China Date Ranch (link here), 85 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada, off Highway 127 en route to Death Valley National Park. It is a grove of date palms and assorted other offerings.

It was a wild and wacky half dozen of us, 5, um, "mature," gals and a dude. The two I knew best were former co-workers. I had not seen one for about 10 years and the other for 20 years, but it was as if time hadn't passed. The other two were the first gal's hubby and one of their friends, and the other was a friend of the other co-worker and her lovable pup, an amiable basset.

desert surroundings
One gal brought picnic food: chicken salad, salad, deviled eggs and beverages; I took 2 kinds of olives and some grapes. One gal brought boiled eggs and Cheetos, and too much more to list..

Sights: we ate at picnic tables under a big wooden gazebo. Around us frolicked (yep, they really DID frolic!) about half a dozen frisky chipmunks. One of them insisted on standing on his legs upright like a mini-meerkat. There were quail a-plenty strolling about, a gecko, and picnic-lovin' horseflies that were almost as big as the dates they sold in the site's shop.

Basically, we arrived in 2 groups. One gal in one group and one in the other soon discovered they had known each other back in the day when they belonged to a ladies' card group - talk about a small world.

I really can't pick a favorite part of that wonderful day, but the "date shake" was high on that list. Their shop whips up an ice cream shake with chopped dates in it - very tasty sweet treat! Loved me that shake!

When we first planned this, I expected we'd sight see on the grove's grounds. Frankly, we were having too much fun just all being together to even get to that point. We were there for almost 4 hours, in warm desert weather. The trip was almost a day long, though, because of the almost two-hour drive over and two more to come home.

This was a day I'll remember for a long time to come.
