The lemongrass stalks were planted a week ago but it’s the
wrong time of the year - so hot and my front lot is so barren and hard.
Anyhow,
I’ve been watering the 6 little “plots” every morning and evening, a little
each time. Still, they are very dry and pale. Working on that. I want to put
something around each plant, like bendable edging, so I can build up some soil and
have a spot where I fill that area for each plant and I can tell better how it’s
soaking in. I’m thinking of putting a plastic bag over each one to create a
greenhouse effect for a while.
Because my dirt is so hard and unworked, I am trying a trick
I worked up in my 15 years in SoCal. My sis had a border of dirt around her
little rented bungalow and she always referred to it as adobe dirt. It was like
rock hard clay. And she wanted to grow some things. So I began tossing fruit
and veggie garbage into a coffee can and taking it over to her place once a
week. I’d poke a hole about a foot away from the previous one, and just dump in
the scraps. Absolutely no pet food or animal/meat materials. Just fruit and/or
veggies. Within a week or two, the “treated” areas changed and that season, she
was eating bush beans as she plucked them, and had cherry tomatoes, radishes
and I forget what else.
So, tomorrow, a week after I began collecting scraps in a
container, I’ll either dig around the plants or find another way of adding them
to the soil around each one. Can’t hurt. Planting them in the red hot summer
season was chancy anyway.
I also made coffee for 3 days for the fridge, a big batch of
carrot/raisin/avocado salad, and diced a few pounds of apples. Nuked the apples
and tossed them into 3 containers for the fridge which I can use for a while
for everything from oatmeal to fruit salads.
But that was all yesterday. This morning I had to visit 3
stores and I really do not feel like doing much at all. I’ll see how energetic
I feel after lunch. Maybe I’ll surprise myself!
Rolling along...
