Drowning in Junk Food and Loving It

Ok, this past week, we have somehow been gifted, or ended up with, junk food and we're loving every cholesterol-sugar-laden crumb of it.

Thankfully, I just had my annual checkup Thursday morning and the required blood test the week before. None of this is showing up. This gives me time to get rid of the effects, if I should live through it, before my next checkup at the end of March.

I love fruitcake, one of the few folks who do, I suspect. But I only love good fruitcake. I suddenly noticed a post on our local Freecycle board that someone was giving it away. When I contacted him, I found it was Texas Manor, a rather costly brand for me. I jumped at the chance, and drove to his apartment and picked up a few pounds of it. Turns out his church was selling it at a fundraiser after buying a minimum-batch-size and had these left after the sale was over. I will have it all next year.

At our Friday morning Charity Crafter's Christmas pot-luck brunch, I brought home the following leftovers - almost a whole Italian home made fruitcake (this needs to be eaten first because it is rather dry but tasty), over half a dozen devilled eggs (love these), about 30 medium-sized shrimp, 4 slices of various flavors of cheesecake, and over half a dozen candies (homemade, Dandy Candy) which were extremely delicious (notice I said "were" and not "are"), plus 2 slices of pecan praline cake w/cream cheese frosting.

My middle-aged nephew bought some cannoli to give as gifts and we ended up keeping 4 here, 2 each.

A neighbor brought over a wee tin of home made Christmas cookies which we are leaving until Christmas to open.

And just now, another neighbor brought us a bunch (half a dozen) home made Tamales, as she does every year.

(Shoot - thought I heard one of you knocking at my door!!!!)

Yep, it's a good thing I had that blood test last week - as it was, on Thursday, I made my doctor smile happily. My cholesterol has gone down to 152, my good cholesterol has gone up, my tri's are still a bit high but he is not worried about those. My blood pressure was 122 over 78, which is great for me, and even though my sugar was a little high and I've gained a couple of pounds this year, he is, overall, pleased with the tests. He'll see me again in 3 months, so when Jan 1 arrives, I better be a better girl!!!!!! I want him to keep smiling...

Better watch your blood sugar. If your doctor does an A1C, the treats will show up!

Oh, by the way...I LOVE fruitcake and my family thinks I am crazy!

LOL - I know, I know, but the A1C is a 3-month "average" so if I watch for the rest of the 3 months, one or two weeks right now won't affect it way ahead in March...hopefully (LOL). As it is, my sugar isn't as bad as some of my friends who are insulin! And I'm not on any diabetes meds - I'm only "borderline," so far...

Oh, Sallie, thank heaven I have found a kindred spirit - Jane was the only other person, besides my sis, who felt that way...watch for an email from me this afternoon...
