Ash Wednesday and Lenten Thoughts

It seems so early to be looking to Ash Wednesday in the morning. I decided to run back through my Lenten posts from last year for inspiration, to help motivate me this year.

Last year, one of my goals was to meditate, at least 10 minutes a day, on Christ and his 40 days and nights of fasting and prayer, and what it means to me today. I failed miserably on that one.

I succeeded, as I have done for several years now, in giving up chocolate except for my mini-peppermint patty before bed. I was successful in that one.

I'm going to give it a try again, on both levels. I also hope to remember to keep meatless Fridays, the way we did when I was a child. This not only builds strength of character by adopting a good habit, it is a healthier way of eating. I'll have either fish or some other protein that day. Not a problem for me, except for the fact that my 73-year-old brain cells might mess me up. Maybe I'll mark it on the kitchen calendar.

On the meditation matter, I want to try to recall, each day during Lent, some facet of Christ's days of retreat. I might read verses from one of the New Testament books, each day, to kick-start my attitude.

No matter what the end result is, I really hope to turn my thoughts to the seriousness of the Lenten season. It is an excellent chance to form new worthwhile habits and to drop useless or harmful ones.

Oh, and I'll share some DIY projects that are especially suitable for Lent, both here and on my Pinterest boards. I hope it will offset the commercialism of the modern Easter season.

Sweet Lord Jesus, please help me to see and hear your words of guidance and wisdom this Lenten season. Help me to keep them in my heart, work them into my daily life, and share them with others as we all make our way in this busy and troubled world. Thank you for what you went through all those centuries ago, for each of us.
