"The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,937 groups with 8,391,986 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by local volunteers (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on 'Browse Groups' above the search box. Have fun!"
I have donated many craft supplies that I no longer use or want. And I have "raised my hand" and replied to many offers of yarn and other supplies. Basically, there are four ways to post: OFFER, WANTED, TAKEN, and RECEIVED. If you have something, you OFFER it, and when it is picked up, you post it as TAKEN. In reverse, if you read an OFFER and want it, you reply to the person directly. If chosen, you will be given directions to their pickup point.
If you want something not listed, you post a WANTED. When, and if, you are lucky enough to find someone at that time who can give you what you ask for, you pick it up, and then post a RECEIVED reply.
It is easy and it is great. There is usually a Freecycle group in or near every major city. Just go to their website:
http://www.freecycle.org/
When you submit a request to join, you will be asked why you wish to join. Obviously, it's because you want to share what you have, and find what others have that you need. Usually, you are accepted in a day or so, at most.
