On TV this morning, there was a clip detailing the history and magnificence of the city of Telluride, nestled in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The scenery was breathtaking.
For me, the most spectacular of all was a scene from a high place, overlooking several grand snow-capped mountains and valleys.
For me, it was a sad scene. I would never be able to take in that scenery in person. I have an inner ear problem. I believe it's a perforation from an infection back in the 70s. It causes me to become dizzy and even black out when I get to extremely high elevations. I passed out in a helicopter once, on a scenic tour. Another time, coming cross-country by bus, I passed out as we crested the Rockies and awoke again as we descended. In a word, those breathtaking scenes are too awesome for my medically-limited body to experience in person.
In a way, I suspect that's what we humans deal with when trying to imagine heaven, or the angels as they truly are, or even the most high Lord God.
I suspect that we are all limited by our human bodies and minds.
I suspect that an angel, in all the angel's spiritual power and glory and love, is too awesome for us to deal with. We would pass out, or worse. That is probably why angels have usually appeared in human form.
As for the Lord God, even in the Old Testament, when he freely spoke to his beloved humans, he shielded them from the sight of him. The actual sight of God must be too magnificent and too powerful for us to contemplate or to deal with while we are in our human form.
Dear Father, what a glorious day that will be when each of us sees you, in all your reality. I pray that I measure up to your expectations of me each day, so that I may stay on the right path and one day I am blessed with that vision.
