Origin of Afghans

For several weeks, because the country Afghanistan has been in the news so much, I've promised myself to check the origin of the word "afghan" when related to knitted or crocheted throws.

This evening, I finally checked Wikipedia. Click here for their explanation.

It was interesting to learn that they were first made in the country of Afghanistan, in geometric designs. They still are geometric patterns, generally speaking.

Wikipedia mentions today's styles are basically one of three types: join-as-you-go, motif, or mile-a-minute styles.

Well, now I have some trivia to toss into my next crafting session. Cool.
