Playing with color is fun. I used to be very rigid in my crocheting and other craft work. I’d follow a pattern exactly, use the colors in the pattern, never stray. I was afraid my own choice would look stupid or weird or terrible. I was afraid I didn’t have any sense of creativity or imagination.
Over the years, I’ve either mellowed or become more experienced. Probably both. Now I look at the pattern, and play with color.
My favorite method is to take a variegated or ombre yarn or thread, and pick solids from the color scheme to work with it. One afghan I made a few years back was one of the loveliest I ever made; it was for a friend’s sister. I took a variegated skein that had colors such as country rose, country blue, soft gray, etc. Then I picked three of those colors, in solids. It was the prettiest thing I’ve ever made and I wish I had taken a photo of it. It ended up with a beautiful Victorian look.
Don’t be afraid to play with color. What’s the worst that could happen? You wouldn’t like it? Then just rip it out and start over. Enjoy being crafty with colors.
Father in Heaven, thank you for all the colors, their shades and hues and tints, that you have given us to pleasure our eyes and our hearts.
