The Right Way to Pray

I’m certain there is no right or wrong way to pray to God for favors and help for ourselves and others. It’s up to each of us, and we each grow in our relationship with Him as we work this out for ourselves. I have had some dear friends in my life who were blessed in being able to let prayer flow from their lips in a wonderful way. All the words were right, heartfelt, and to the point. They made me feel good. Many of these folks prayed aloud, for and with others.

When I’ve tried to pray aloud, it sounds forced to me. I don’t mean the standard pre-written prayers like the Lord’s Prayer. I mean on-the-spot prayer. I just do not have the knack. But I can write a prayer in an instant, and I guess not everyone can do that. So we each have our style and our abilities.

In the Bible, I believe it was David who wrote the Psalms, right? They are absolutely beautiful. I doubt very many people have ever been blessed in this way. Yet some fast and furious prayers must be just as beautiful to God’s ears. It all depends on the intent, the heart, and the person. So long as we just make the effort to pray, to speak with God, to tell him what we need, what we are thankful for, why we are worried, in whatever is our style, that is what counts. We should never fear that we are not up to someone else’s standards of prayer-quality.

Dear God, thank you for hearing my humble prayers and thank you for all the times you have answered them.
