Crafting Our Own Designs

Almost everyone who has ever wielded a hook, a needle, or a pair of needles, has created at least one thing on their own. Sometimes it is accidental; sometimes, intentional.

When it’s accidental, for me, it’s usually because when I worked the pattern, it didn't look like the instructions or illustration said it would. For others, it might just be the need for practice. A dear friend’s sister asked me to teach her to crochet years ago. I did. I hate teaching crochet, but she was determined to learn and easy to teach. However, she always had trouble “seeing” where to put the hook. We all kidded her for a long while when a scarf she tried to make became long ski caps for her kids. Don’t even ask what happened when she tried a ripple stitch afghan. Poor thing ended up with wings on both sides. But with all of that, she made some things that made her and others happy. That’s what counts.

My problem with creating something is that I often set out to make something specific. I’ll get tired of searching for just the right pattern to satisfy me and try to create one of my own. However, I stupidly assume I will remember what I’ve done once I’ve done it right. Often, I rip it out several times until I get the right result. By that time, if I was smart enough to write down what I did to start with, my scribbles and scratch-outs from trial-and-error make it impossible to re-create what I did. Once in a while, though, it is worth it and I end up with a keeper, a pattern that makes me happy and a long-time favorite.

Guide me, please, Dear God, with the skills you helped me develop, so I can create something that will bring joy to others.
