The Calming Effect of Crafts

Crafting, and especially crocheting has always soothed and calmed me. It also helps me to feel I’m doing something worthwhile. The sweet routine of stitch after stitch, row after row, or round after round mesmerizes and hypnotizes me into serenity.
Crafting is creation, in a miniscule way. Not a child, but not unlike creating a child. I start with something that is totally different from what the end result will be, and watch in wonder as it is shaped into something special.
By crocheting, I take my mind off of my troubles. It often frees my mind to find a solution I had been seeking.
Crocheting is like a prayer from my hands. I am amazed and grateful that God gave me the ability to do this, to use my craft for me and for others.

Hi Evelyn, I find crafts to be soothing too...especially weaving. I learned weaving on a floor loom in a class at Ohio University. There I did wall hangings. Then when I lived in Virginia I wove scarves on a small table loom, for everyone in my family, different colors. I love yarns that change colors as they go, within a particular color scheme. Then you get a delightfully unpredictable but beautiful result. Although I got an F on one of my weaving projects in school, because of errors in the pattern and edges not straight, I always loved weaving anyway. A crooked scarf made with love is still pretty in my eyes. - Sylvia.

Hi, Sylvia. That is a wonderful way of looking at handcrafted works - I love your comment, "A crooked scarf made with love is still pretty in my eyes." Maybe we try too hard, at times, to be perfect. Your words will help me relax and enjoy crafting even more. Thank you. Evie
