“God always answers prayers. Sometimes it’s ‘yes.’ Sometimes the answer is ‘no.’ Sometimes it’s ‘you gotta be kidding.’”—Jimmy Carter, former U.S. President
What I love about this is that it makes me realize I am not alone in recognizing that because we are made in God's own image, we must get a lot of our traits directly from him. I believe our love of music and song, our unending capacity to forgive and to love, and our sense of humor all come from him, in his image.
The music and song I feel confident are in his image because of how often in the Bible we see mention of the angels of the heavenly choir, and how often hymns of glory are detailed, and so many more instances.
The unending forgiveness and unending capacity to love is shown in how often he forgives us and how often we ourselves are surprised when we can forgive others or feel love for those who others consider unlovable.
And our sense of humor must come from him, too. The Lord mentions making the enemy a laughingstock in Ezekiel 22:4 and making the enemy drunk and full of laughter and causing them to sleep and not awake in Jeremiah 51:39. One translation of the Beatitudes has those who weep ultimately laugh in Luke 6:21. But even without these references, laughter is not found in the lower animals, but only in those of us with a soul, a precious gift from God.
Yes, I truly believe our Heavenly Father is the prime source of our sense of humor.
Father, thank you for all your gifts, for all that we inherit from you just by being your children, and please accept our joy in accepting these gifts.
