Angel on my Shoulder or in my Pocket?

Sometimes I can get a little cocky when it comes to my faith. When I came out of anesthesia after my failed colonoscopy (I'll explain at another time) this morning, they tried to get me to take it easy, to help me walk after I dressed. I shrugged them off with a smile, saying I never have any trouble after anesthesia.

They gave me papers explaining that I should rest the remainder of the day after I got home, and not drive. I shrugged that off, too, with the same remark.

When I got home, I immediately got "into things." I fixed breakfast for Frank, woke him for his mid-day trip to work, and told him not to worry, I'd take him in. I'd considered letting him take the car today, but we try to avoid that because there is a lack of un-restricted parking near his job and we always end up with tickets. So, I drove him over, overriding his concern about the anesthesia just a few hours before, with the same remark.

I had been praying hard from the time I awoke for a "happy outcome" to my morning procedure, and I felt that the Lord and his angels were still watching over me.

When I got home, I saw a neighbor on his porch, and walked across to him and sat for a half hour. When I left him, I saw the neighbors three homes down from me, outside their home, and walked a few feet down to talk to them. Finally, I went back inside. I began doing a few other little things, and suddenly I felt light-headed and could not focus. Ok, Lord, I sighed, I get the message.

I made sure nothing needed immediate attention, left a phone message for one neighbor, sat in the recliner, called the lap kitty, and finally did what I was supposed to do. I realized that God helps those who help themselves, but I'm not sure it extends to those who abuse that privilege.

Father, thank you for looking after me, and for reminding me that I can get a bit arrogant regarding your care giving and that I sometimes take it for granted. I'm grateful for your gentle reminders and hope I never need anything stronger that those.
