Crafts and History

Today is the day when we remember the birth of our nation. I was thinking about how crafters figure into our history, and I became focused on Betsy Ross and our first flag. After checking online, I find that there are differences of opinion as to whether she was the one who truly sewed that first flag.

To me, that's not important. In those days, some woman did sew it. In those days, she cut the pieces of fabric for the stripes, and cut each star, and hand stitched that flag. It was a crafter, no matter what her name was. Hand crafts, especially needlework, were very important back then.

So today, I personally salute each and every person, male and female alike, who works with their hands, to create something that is either useful, or culturally artistic, or both.
