A dear friend of 80 is in the hospital and nights are the worst of times for her. She feels especially lonely then. I see her each day, but in the mornings.
Tonight, I shared with her a secret I’ve used for many years, for nights when I could not fall asleep because of worry or fear. In the hospital in ’99 with colon cancer, I fell back on this secret. I pick a prayer that I love and I repeat it over and over, like a mantra.
She isn’t aware of as many prayers as I am, but she does know the Lord’s Prayer. I said it aloud to her on the phone, to be sure. I told her it might help if she just whispered it to herself, over and over. I mentioned how it would help her feel closer to the Lord.
With me, after I’ve done that a few times, I find myself calming and relaxing. After a few repetitions, I begin to yawn, and then, sleep. I hope with all my heart that it helps her, too She said she would try. Talking to the Lord, even in routine prayer, soothes the soul.
Father in Heaven, help her to feel your peace in her heart and soul this night; let her rest in your arms and feel your healing touch.
