A variation of the “Great oaks from tiny acorns grow,” this brings home many thoughts and ideas to me. On the surface, it is simple. Stitch by stitch, row by row (or round by round), a beautiful, warm, and filled-with-love afghan grows from the warmth in our hands and fingers.
In life, the same thing happens. One small act, one small task, may not seem important when standing alone. But add many similar acts, many related tasks, and something good can result.
Many craft groups accomplish this with “charity swaps.” Each member contributes just one item - a square, a baby cap, whatever. When they are all collected, a wonderful afghan is made from the squares for a needy person, or a multitude of caps are sent to a hospital or child care center.
A friend of mine, for years, collected coats, jackets, sweaters, each fall, for the local homeless. All she did was put an announcement in our community newsletter. She always ended up with huge lawn bags full of them. She lovingly washed each item as it came in, her special contribution. She alone could never have offered the homeless so much, but together, it produced a wonderful result.
This blog began as one small post. I was not sure I could write something different every night. I am amazed that I have already written over 100 of these. I had only planned to share my thoughts about crafts. With what I've done, I am now planning to gather the best of them into an eBook and maybe even a paperback. And it all started with one small post.
Lord, help me to remember that every handcrafted project begins with one small stitch, and everything worthwhile in my life begins with one small step.
