I’m Stitchin’, not Bitchin’

Needlecrafts, especially, are great for keeping us sane. My friend, Sylvia, mentioned in a very early comment on this blog, how weaving in college had a calming effect. Any craft with a repetitive rhythm would work that way. Perhaps even painting or sculpture could distract the artist from life’s problems enough to soothe and calm.

But for this post, I’m thinking mostly of the crafts that we can do while we are doing other things like having conversations, watching television, riding a bus, train, or subway, sitting in a waiting room, etc.

During those times, it’s very relaxing to give our minds up to what has been called the rhythm of the stitch. Repeating the pattern, row after row, round after round, has an effect on the soul and the mind that quiets us and brings peace. Crocheting and knitting are excellent for mindless repetition.

I’m grateful, Dear God, for the serenity you send my way through the rhythm of the stitch.
