When I was much younger, the brand of yarn, or thread, or crochet hook, and even a pattern author, made no difference to me. I made equal-opportunity mistakes. Now, however, I am amazed at things I never noticed before.
Crochet hooks differ greatly by brand. I have now settled into using either of two brands. I have old hooks from other brands and I should just get rid of them so that I do not accidentally pick one up. Every time I do that, I find, to my disgust, that my gauge is off from what I expect from favorite patterns.
Yarns and threads differ in quality by brands, too. With some brands, it’s very likely I’ll find a knot or two or three, somewhere in the skein or ball, usually where it will be the most visible in the finished project. With other brands, I rarely find that. The texture of the fiber differs, too. Some are scratchy to the touch. Some say “worsted weight” but the gauge is different from that of worsted weight in another brand. So, I try to stick to one or two major brands that are most
similar.
I was amazed at how much difference there is in instructions, too. Some designers and pattern authors are more specific and helpful than others. With some, I have to guess what I need to do at the beginning or end of a row, or how many double crochets I should have when I’ve finished a row or round. Again, I find that I stick to trusted favorites.
Thank you, Father, for letting me gain at least a little wisdom and sense along the way!
