Crafted Items for Non-Intended Uses

I’ve written often about how easy it is to use a handcrafted item for a non-intended use. Today, I was on a friend’s porch and noticed some beautiful 6-inch doilies under her potted plants on a corner plant stand. They were lovely; they really set off that corner of her porch.

What impressed me most, other than the beauty of the pattern itself, was that she was not afraid to use them outside on the porch. She liked them. She was using them. So what if she needed to wash them oftener than when they are in the house? She was enjoying them every time she came out on the porch. What’s more, everyone who came up onto her porch enjoyed them, too.

I have some beautiful potholders, very lacey, that my DM made over 20 years ago. She did extraordinary work. I’ve saved these last dozen or so, and have not put them out. How silly of me. Mom made them for me to enjoy. A few are pretty enough to even use as hot pads or doilies. I think I will do that with a few of them. So what if their little hanging loops are visible? I’ll place them toward the back.

Dear God, thank you for opening my eyes to what’s important - enjoying the hand-made items I have all around me.
