Aside from the Biblical references to Jesus being in the midst of two or more gathered in his name, there is a special joy in praying in the presence of others. It is probably one of the main reasons for these groups. Prayer groups know this. Church organizers know this. In church, we are all worshiping and praying to the same God. When we pray with others, we feel comforted and loved. We probably also feel that our prayers are getting a little more attention because more of us are calling attention to them. There is also the feeling of belonging and of fellowship that soothes us.
We cannot all join prayer groups. We cannot all get to church regularly. We can try to do these things as often as possible. We should try to do so. Even in a “cold” or “aloof” setting, just look around. At church, I often did that. I reminded myself that no matter what their motivation, these people gave up an hour of their time to be here, together, to testify to their faith in God and their faith in each other. Each person’s faith is a little different, yet it is the same. Unless we are in a group, such as church or a prayer group, we do not broaden our perspective and see that.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the presence of other believers and guide me to them when I need their company.
