Hot Summer Days and Crafts

A friend mentioned to me today that she hates doing afghans in the summer, especially, because of the weight. This is a problem for lots of us. I crochet, rather than knit, and I have found that the crochet-in-strips type of pattern works best for me if I must make one during the summer.

The strips are very easy to deal with. Joining them goes very quickly. If you choose your pattern with care, you might not have to do an all-around edging or border. I stay away from squares during the hot seasons. They take longer to join, are on the lap longer, and never seem to be done. In the winter, they are welcome! Even the ripple afghan can be unbearably hot to work during the summer. Yes, I’d say the strip-style is the best. And, the lacier or the more open spaces in the pattern, the better. In the summer, an afghan is mostly used to ward off air conditioning chills, and usually are lap-robe size.

Can’t find a strip-style afghan pattern? Why not take an edging pattern that you like and just use worsted weight yarn rather than cotton thread? It should not be a “chain 133 and work on the foundation chain” type of pattern, but rather one that works upward as you go. That way, you again avoid the problem of a lot on your lap during the hot days and nights. I’m sure there are similar pattern ideas for knitters.

Afghans will always be a favorite of crafters, so make it easy on yourself when you can.
