Yard Sales and Crafters - Made for Each Other

There is something special, something magical, about yard sales or garage sales. Anyone who does handcrafts cannot help but love them. We benefit two ways when we visit these sales. We can find supplies (yarn, fabric, wood, etc.) and patterns (both old and new). We can also find finished projects that give us ideas for more projects to try.

I can remember a sale on someone’s driveway in southern California in the 80s. My best friend, Jane, was only in her late 60s and I was only in my mid-50s. We could scramble around really well back then. We almost left that sale and then decided to peek into this huge brown unlabeled carton. The box was literally up to my shoulders and I had to raise up a bit to look in.

It was filled, literally stuffed, with yarn. Some was pre-cut for latch-hook work, which Jane was really into back then. And some yarn was in skeins. When we asked, it turned out that there were several more boxes of the yarn inside the garage. We were in an earthly heaven! I can’t truthfully remember the price but it was extremely low, and even at that low price there was more of it than we could buy with what we had on us. We stuffed the car with what we could get, went home, unloaded, got more money, and hit it again. By then, others had found our stash, but we did get a little more. I will probably never find anything like that again, and I cannot honestly remember why they had all that yarn. Still, because of that, and because of similar stories I’ve heard from others, my fingers twitch when I pass a yard sale.

Dear Lord, open my eyes to opportunity when it is around me, and give me the wisdom to know my limits.
