Creative Crafting with Purpose

Yesterday, I somehow got into the subject of getting creative with the materials and tools we use. It was aimed at myself and any others who are not ordinarily or extraordinarily creative. It is one way to vary what we make, with what we have, and with the designs and patterns we already use.

Changing a design or pattern by way of changing materials or tools excites me. Tonight, I realized we can also get creative by changing the purpose of a project. When I look back, I have done this many times. A coaster can also be a mini-doily for a bud vase or a wee dish of mints or nuts. A mini-doily can be a coaster. For ceramics, old ashtray molds could easily be reworked as candy dishes. There’s no reason we cannot interchange hot pads and potholders. Large afghan squares can be pillow tops, and vice versa. Fridgies can be pins, and pins can be fridgies. A bookmark can grow into a headband, and a headband can stop short and be a bookmark. Some leprechaun patterns can be done in red and become Santa’s and the reverse can be done by changing the color to green.

In today’s world, it’s called “thinking outside the box.” I hate buzz-words but that phrase seems to fit here. The more I think about it, the more excited I get. I might not be from-scratch creative, but I sure am adaptable, and that’s enough to make me happy and expand my stock of projects for gift-giving.

Dear Lord, thank you for an open mind.
