Many crafters are extremely talented. They can look at something and re-create it. They don’t rely on patterns or designs. They experiment with colors and shapes and when they make something unusual, it is “art.” When I make something unusual, it is a mess.
There is, however, one way we can experiment and be creative without messing up too badly. Just by trying new materials, we can change the way one of our favorites appears.
The crochet world today is exploding in the use of unusual materials. Plastic bags, recycled by being cut into strips and then crocheted into tote bags, have been a big hit for about a decade. Lately, I’ve seen many patterns and suggestions for using old VCR tape or cassette tape for crochet. I remember my DM often using basic string. There is no limit or barrier for odd materials. If you can get it to make a circle and put a hook through it, you can use it. People use ribbon and beading cord or wire, and even dental floss or fishing line. And that’s just crochet.
Almost all crafts can benefit if you vary the materials in some way, especially texture. Or, you can change your tools just a bit. In needlework, changing the size of the needle(s), hook(s), or other tool will often result in a totally different look. I remember using fine shaded thread for a “lei” pattern (part of a costume) once, instead of yarn, and ended up with a wonderful fashion doll-sized lei.
Father, fill me with love of my craft and the courage to experiment now and then, and guide my hands with your love.
