Quality Time with “Sacred Music”

Taking things for granted is an all too common human failing and weakness. Tonight I am aware of it big time as I sit here writing this post and catching up on emails and such, at my desktop computer, just before I shut down and go to bed.

Sometime last year, I realized how many CDs I’d accumulated. Not just mine, but also those from my deceased “nephew,” from my sis, my brother, and from those friends passed along. It is a wide mix - country western, oldies, instrumentals, opera, classical, hymns and gospel, and more. I managed to load perhaps a dozen onto my hard drive and then put those out at one of our semi-annual park wide yard sales. Lots more to go and get rid of but all in its own time.

My best time for listening to any of them is now, at the end of the day, as I sit at the computer. For an hour or so, I play things like Patsy Cline or Roy Orbison or whatever strikes my fancy that night. Then I join in a nighttime ritual with Silkie while I brush her, spend quality time on the floor with her, talk and sing to her. That’s her “good night story” routine.

When I come back in to the computer, I prefer that last hour to be very soothing. Usually it is either instrumental or what a friend loved to call “sacred music.”

I rather like that term. It covers a wide spectrum in that area and still keeps it in its place in my head.

The past few nights it’s been only “sacred music” before bed. Right now, I’m listening to the end of How Great Thou Art. On this same CD (50 hymns), I also listened to Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, Amazing Grace and many others. It is a very comforting and serene way to end my night. Just as I spend quality time with Silkie before bed, this is my quality time with the Lord. I rather like it. But I never thanked him properly for providing it.

Father in Heaven, thank you for sending such enjoyable music into my life. Thank you that I am able to listen and enjoy it as I end the day and prepare to rest for the next day to come. Thank you for everything.

It works for me - I need to end my night on an upbeat note so as my head hits the pillow, I am saying nightly "prayers of thanks," even if all I can think of is hot and cold running water in the house (which I didn't have for many months when the old mobile home needed re-piping and I didn't have the funds) or a roof over my head (which leaked badly two years ago)... we can always find something, no matter how small, to be thankful for, I find - Hugs and prayers for you and yours...
